China Introduces Facial Recognition Police Robots Equipped with Tear Gas

Stepping towards integrating robotics into law enforcement, Chinese authorities have begun testing an autonomous spherical robot, the RT-G, developed by the local robotics company Logon Technology. This high-tech robot is designed to operate in both extreme environments and urban settings, offering a glimpse into the future of crime prevention.

The RT-G is an impressive piece of technology, capable of navigating across land and water at speeds of up to 35 km/h, according to Interesting Engineering. Its spherical design allows it to smoothly roll over various terrains, including mud and rough surfaces, making it versatile in all environments. The robot is also built to withstand harsh conditions, with the ability to endure impacts of up to four tons, ensuring that it can operate effectively in high-risk situations.

The most notable feature of the RT-G is its advanced AI, which enables it to assist law enforcement in urban patrols. According to The Sun, the robot is equipped with facial recognition technology, allowing it to identify known criminals and detect disturbances. Once a threat is identified, RT-G can take action on its own. Equipped with non-lethal tools such as a net gun, tear gas sprayers, and sound-wave dispersal devices, it can immobilize suspects without escalating the situation.

Since its debut just two months ago, videos have shown the robot patrolling city streets, chasing and immobilizing suspects, and collaborating with police officers to maintain public safety. According to Interesting Engineering, Initially, some viewed the RT-G as a mere marketing gimmick, but its rapid deployment highlights the increasing integration of AI-driven robots in real-world policing operations.
