Hitting Moving Targets—Even Through Smoke and Storms

Modern air operations are often complicated by poor visibility. Darkness, heavy weather, smoke and dust can all degrade sensors and make it harder to track mobile targets. Adversaries are well aware of these limitations and may use such conditions to conceal movement or avoid detection. For strike aircraft, this creates a persistent demand for precision weapons that can function reliably regardless of the environment.

A newly cleared munition aims to address that gap. The StormBreaker smart weapon (developed by Raytheon) has been approved for operational use on carrier-based F/A-18E/F Super Hornet strike fighters. Designed as a winged, guided glide bomb, the system is built to autonomously detect, classify and engage moving targets in degraded visual conditions.

According to Interesting Engineering, at the core of the weapon is a tri-mode seeker that combines millimeter wave radar, imaging infrared and semi-active laser guidance. The radar mode enables detection and tracking through adverse weather. The imaging infrared sensor improves target discrimination, while the laser mode allows the munition to home in on a designated target from an airborne or ground-based laser source. Data from all three modes is fused, allowing the weapon to adapt to changing battlefield conditions and maintain tracking on fixed or moving targets, day or night.

Beyond its seeker technology, the munition’s compact size allows aircraft to carry multiple weapons on a single sortie. This can reduce the number of aircraft required for a given strike package. With a range of more than 72 kms, the glide capability enables launch from outside certain threat envelopes, potentially limiting exposure of aircrews to enemy air defenses.

All-weather precision strike capability is a critical enabler for maritime and expeditionary operations. The ability to engage mobile targets despite obscurants strengthens operational flexibility and supports missions in complex environments where visibility cannot be guaranteed.
