Big data and visual illustration tools supply a rare perspective on the complete picture of rocket attacks on Israel. An Israeli data scientist, Yoav Tepper, created an interactive map with a spectacular video showcasing data on alarms due to rocket launches on Israel during recent years. 

“Dozens of thousands of rockets were launched towards Israel since 2001,” he writes on geektime.co.il, saying his aim was to find out the frequency of the alerts in various regions in Israel. His project was designed to visualize the complete picture through data accessible to the public at large.

After collecting information regarding the alerts and refining the data, he moved to the visualization of the results. Using Kepler, a powerful open source geospatial analysis tool, into which all the data was fed, he built a fascinating visual, interactive display that reflects the distribution of alerts in Israel’s different regions:
