The Israeli Air Force continues to upgrade the operational capabilities of its C-130 transport aircraft.

A new very advanced mission planning and navigation system is being installed in the cockpits of the Israeli Air Force (IAF) C-130’s.

The “Globus” system has been developed by the IAF based on core technology of Elbit Systems.

Until recently, the advanced system has been installed only in the weapon systems officer’s position in the Hercules C-130, locally nicknames ’Karfnaf’ (Hebrew for ’Rhino’).

Any changes or deviations in the flight path were conveyed orally by the weapon systems officer to the other members in the cockpit.

The added system will enable the pilots to see the changes in real time on the monitors.

The C-130 “Yellow Bird” squadron is in the process of integrating more “Globus” monitors. The pilots are currently being trained to use it.

In the meantime, the IAF continues the integration of its C-130 J (Samson). There are currently six C-130J’s on order.

The IAF is operating 18 C-130 E/H. In recent years all the fleet underwent fatigue tests with the assistance of the manufacturer, Lockheed Martin. The installation of the Globus system is a first phase of a total redesign of the H model cockpit which will include more digital displays and head up displays.
