The Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) “Work horse” the Heron unmanned air systems (UAS) will continue to serve the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). The Heron, which has been in use by RAAF in Afghanistan since 2010, has managed to accumulate 20,000 flying hours.

We have achieved 20,000 hours in less than four years, which is an immense amount of intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance support to soldiers on the ground,” Commanding Officer of the Heron Detachment, Wing Commander (WGCDR) John McMullan told the RAAF website.

The Heron was selected after fierce competition with other rival systems. Its selection was based on the successful performance intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. RAAF recently announced that they will extend its lease of IAI’s Heron used in Afghanistan until mid 2014.
