Satellites have become a critical part of modern military operations, providing communications, navigation, intelligence and targeting data to forces around the world. As dependence on space assets grows, so does the need for ways to counter hostile satellites without creating long-lasting debris that could threaten other spacecraft. Instead of destroying satellites outright, militaries are increasingly investing in technologies that temporarily disrupt their operation.
The U.S. Space Force has introduced one such capability with Meadowlands, a mobile electromagnetic warfare system designed to interfere with enemy satellites from the ground. Rather than using missiles or anti-satellite weapons, the system transmits powerful radio-frequency signals that prevent targeted satellites from operating normally while leaving them physically intact.
The system works by directing a high-power electromagnetic signal toward a satellite’s communications antenna. The transmitted signal overwhelms or interferes with the satellite’s uplink, making it difficult or impossible for the spacecraft to receive commands from ground operators. Without reliable command and control, the satellite may temporarily lose its ability to process telemetry, receive instructions or maintain the communications links needed to perform its mission. Because the effect relies on signal interference rather than physical damage, normal operation can potentially resume once transmissions stop.
According to NextGenDefense, the system incorporates multi-band, dual-polarization satellite communication antennas alongside low-noise amplifiers, high-power amplifiers and an antenna photonics unit. Supporting multiple frequency bands enables it to operate against a wider range of satellite communications, while dual polarization improves flexibility by allowing the antennas to work with different signal orientations used by various spacecraft.
Unlike earlier generations of satellite jamming equipment, the system has been designed for rapid deployment. The entire system is mounted on a wheeled trailer that can travel by road or be transported aboard cargo aircraft such as the C-130 Hercules, allowing it to be repositioned quickly in response to changing operational requirements.
Electromagnetic warfare has become an increasingly important element of military space operations because it offers a reversible alternative to kinetic anti-satellite weapons. Destroying a satellite can generate thousands of pieces of orbital debris that remain in space for years, potentially threatening civilian and military spacecraft alike. Temporary electronic disruption, by contrast, allows militaries to deny an adversary the use of space-based capabilities while minimizing the long-term impact on the orbital environment.
Following its recent acceptance for operational service, the system is expected to become a key component of the Space Force’s electromagnetic warfare capability. The service plans to expand the fleet over the coming years as it continues shifting toward non-destructive methods for countering space-based threats.
