Sixth-generation combat aircraft are expected to reshape future air combat by combining low observability, long-range operations, advanced sensors, artificial intelligence, and close cooperation with autonomous systems. Although several countries are developing aircraft in this category, most programs remain highly secretive, with very few official details released publicly.
A newly published Chinese military video has now provided what appears to be the first official look at one of these next-generation platforms.
The footage briefly shows an aircraft widely believed to be the J-36, revealing several external design features without disclosing any technical specifications. During a short climbing maneuver, the aircraft’s tailless configuration and diamond-shaped wing can be seen, offering observers a clearer view than previous unofficial images.
One of the most distinctive aspects of the design is the absence of conventional horizontal tail surfaces. Eliminating these structures can reduce radar reflections while potentially improving aerodynamic efficiency, although it also requires highly advanced flight-control systems to maintain stability throughout the flight envelope.
The aircraft appears only briefly in the video, and no information was released regarding propulsion, onboard sensors, weapons, range, or other operational capabilities. According to NextGenDefense, the video also includes a conversation between pilots aboard a nearby transport aircraft referring to “Little Six”, which is a phrase widely interpreted by observers as referencing a sixth-generation fighter.
Although many technical details remain unknown, sixth-generation combat aircraft are generally expected to build upon the capabilities of current stealth fighters. Future platforms are anticipated to integrate advanced sensor fusion, high-capacity onboard computing, long-range networking, and the ability to coordinate operations with autonomous collaborative drones that can perform reconnaissance, electronic warfare, or strike missions alongside crewed aircraft.
From a defense perspective, sixth-generation fighters are expected to play a central role in future air operations. Their combination of reduced radar signatures, greater operational range, AI-assisted decision support, and integration with unmanned systems is intended to improve survivability and expand mission flexibility in increasingly contested environments.
The aircraft shown in the video is believed to be one of two separate sixth-generation fighter programs currently under development. However, until additional official information is released, its full capabilities remain a matter of speculation.
The brief appearance nevertheless represents a notable milestone, providing the clearest official indication yet of how one emerging sixth-generation fighter design may be taking shape as the global race to field next-generation combat aircraft continues.
