Arcfox, a Chinese EV brand under BAIC Group, has rolled out its first extended-range electric vehicle (EREV), the Alpha T5 Extended Range Edition. Designed as a mid-size SUV, the new model combines electric driving with a fuel-based range extender, offering a total driving range of up to 1,215 kms.

The Alpha T5 is powered by a dual-system setup: a CATL Freevoy battery system paired with BAIC’s Shenqing extended-range powertrain. This configuration allows the vehicle to cover approximately 215 kms on electric power alone before the 1.5-liter engine kicks in to generate additional electricity. That engine operates with 40% thermal efficiency and delivers an estimated hybrid fuel economy of 100 kms per 5.2 liters.

According to Interesting Engineering, in terms of performance, the Alpha T5 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds on a full charge. Even with a depleted battery, the vehicle maintains reasonable performance, reaching the same speed in 7.6 seconds. The battery supports fast charging, which means it can charge from 30% to 80% in just 15 minutes.

The powertrain includes several efficiency-focused features; generator efficiency is reported at 95%, while the electric drive system achieves 98% efficiency. The oil-to-electric energy conversion reaches over 3.5 kWh per liter. In terms of energy consumption, the SUV uses about 26.5 kWh per 100 kms.

The vehicle also incorporates comfort-enhancing measures. Vibration is significantly reduced during start-stop operations of the range extender, and active noise suppression technology helps maintain cabin quietness. The difference in sound levels between electric-only and extended-range modes remains under 1 decibel.

The Alpha T5 follows the earlier launch of the all-electric Arcfox T1 hatchback, which debuted at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show with a range of up to 426 kms, depending on the battery option. While Arcfox has focused on fully electric models until now, the addition of the T5 EREV marks a shift toward greater flexibility in its vehicle offerings—targeting both urban users and those with longer-range needs in China’s evolving EV market.
