As part of the UK’s ongoing efforts to assist Ukraine in its defense against Russia, the UK Ministry of Defence has awarded a £1.6 billion ($2 billion) contract to Thales to manufacture over 5,000 Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMMs) for Ukraine.
The LMMs are compact yet powerful, weighing just 13 kilograms each. The missiles have a range of over 6 kilometers and can reach speeds in excess of Mach 1.5, or 1,850 kilometers per hour. These advanced missiles are designed to counter a variety of aerial threats, including drones and enemy aircraft, and will play a pivotal role in bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
The production of the LMMs will be carried out at Thales’ Belfast facility in Northern Ireland. This contract will not only aid Ukraine in its immediate defense efforts but also contribute to long-term security by providing the necessary tools to deter further aggression, according to UK Defense Secretary John Healey. He emphasized that this support is crucial as Ukraine enters a critical phase of the conflict, ensuring the country’s ability to defend itself against continuing missile and drone strikes.
As part of the broader strategic partnership between the UK and Ukraine, the contract will also foster local industry growth. It is expected to create 200 new jobs and sustain 700 existing positions in Belfast. This contract builds on previous military support, including a 2024 deal for around 650 air defense missiles, further solidifying the relationship between the two nations.
This new contract between the UK and Thales marks a significant step in strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities and further deepening the industrial collaboration between the two nations. As the conflict in Ukraine continues to evolve, such partnerships are crucial not only for immediate defense needs but also for ensuring long-term security and stability in the region. With the UK’s continued commitment to support Ukraine and bolster its own defense industry, this deal represents a promising development in the shared efforts to deter further aggression and secure a peaceful, sovereign future for Ukraine.
