The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has officially launched the Zmiy, an advanced unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) designed to support military logistics in combat zones. The vehicle, named after the Ukrainian word for “snake,” is built to carry heavy loads and perform critical tasks in high-risk environments.
With a carrying capacity of up to 500 kilograms, the Zmiy can transport supplies and equipment across challenging terrain. Its towing abilities also allow it to pull light vehicles out of dangerous or obstructed areas, proving essential for logistical support during operations.
According to the Defense Post, the vehicle’s robust design includes integrated ballistic and mine protection systems so that it wouldn’t be easily disrupted by enemy defenses. The Zmiy has been specifically designed to meet the unique challenges of military settings, with attention given to its durability and functionality. In late 2024, it received NATO codification, an acknowledgment of its adherence to international military standards and technological excellence.
The Zmiy’s design emphasizes quiet, covert operation, powered by an electric motor that allows it to conduct missions without alerting adversaries. It moves on metal wheels, but wide, heavy-duty treads give it excellent traction on rough, muddy, and uneven surfaces. On solid ground, the UGV can achieve speeds of up to 14 kilometers per hour, and it can maintain a speed of 13 kilometers per hour off-road.
This versatile vehicle is capable of navigating a variety of obstacles, including trenches and steep inclines, as well as crossing shallow water. Its snake-like maneuverability also allows it to climb over small fallen trees, ensuring it can continue operations even in difficult terrain.
The Zmiy’s capabilities make it a valuable asset for the Ukrainian military, as it supports both tactical operations and logistical needs in complex environments. With its official NATO codification, the UGV is part of Ukraine’s strategy to modernize its defense infrastructure and improve operational effectiveness in the field.
