An aerospace company has recently announced the first successful autonomous flight of the Autonomous Pod Transport (APT) 70, bringing us one step closer to heavy autonomous drone delivery services.

The company, Bell Textron Inc., will continue flying and testing the APT 70 throughout the rest of the year.

The APT 70 is a large quadcopter drone, capable of reaching speeds of over 100 miles per hour and a carrying capacity of up to 70 pounds, much faster and stronger than most other drones. The autonomous drone will be designed for a variety of different missions, from simply delivering packages, to medical transport and disaster relief.

Bell has designed the drone to be operated simply, while remaining fast and efficient. The system was built to be rapidly deployed with the help of quick battery swaps and recharging capabilities.

Uasvision.com mentions that Bell is in collaboration with the Japanese logistics provider, Yamato. Bell is working with Yamato to integrate the APT 70 with Yamato’s package handling system in order to provide an on-demand logistics service. The two companies are preparing to begin operating the service by within the next few years.
