It is imperative for infantry units to be equipped with the finest weaponry. US soldiers have been using the same old rifles for years now and it is time for a change. At the rate that technology is improving, it is time for soldiers to be better equipped with some new rifles.

The US Army is looking into creating a new weapon that not only doubles the speed at which a bullet is fired, but also doubles the range. Currently, a conventional rifle fires a 5.56 NATO round with a range up to 300 meters where it can still be effective, according to militarytimes.com. If both of these factors are enhanced, then these new rifles will have the capability of producing much more damage. The rifles will have the ability to penetrate through modern body armor.
The fact that the gun is not so large creates a major advantage for soldiers, as the rifle does not call for a barrel longer than 10 inches. Typically, a weapon with this much fire power would not be so accessible and feasible to use. One notable aspect for these new rifles will be to hopefully one day have the power to be used with unmanned vehicles and drones as well. The rifles are planned to be used strictly for infantry and other close-combat units.

All of these improvements and advancements are being developed by the US Army Research Laboratory (ARL) scientists. The new high-velocity rifles should be ready for use within the next two years. Once ready for use in battle, safety should be ensured at a higher level and risk will be minimized for troops in combat zones.
