The DeepStrike missile is Raytheon’s attempt to replace the Army Tactical Missile System as part of the United States Army’s Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) Program. The Army Tactical Missile System was designed in the 1970s and is approaching the end of its service life, so it is about time for the Army to look into alternatives.

During testing, the DeepStrike missile was detonated under a controlled environment and experts at the National Technical Systems testing facility determined that the warhead exceeds performance requirements based on the mass and distribution of the fragments.

Using the expertise the Raytheon has acquired over the years, the missile is positioned to provide the Army with the best possible long range surface to surface missile. “This test… shows how quickly we are moving to deliver this much-needed capability to ground troops,” said Dr. Thomas Bussing, Raytheon Advanced Missile Systems vice president.

The long range precision strike missile is designed to fly farther and faster than its predecessor, with double the firepower at half the cost. It is more maneuverable and its design allows for system upgrades to easily be integrated into the missile.

Armyrecognition.com mentions that the DeepStrike missile will be able to defeat fixed land targets between 60 and 499 kilometers away, increasing the Army’s capability to overmatch an adversary on the battlefield and improving responsiveness.
