Innovative technologies in the military and security fields were showcased at a recent hackathon attended by the IDF technological teleprocessing officers. The exercise was part of the technological instruction framework for the officers of the Computer Science Directorate, focusing on three content areas – computerization, engineering, and cyber. A life-saving dog tag was one of the technologies developed by the cadets.

It is an NFC dog tag containing the soldier’s basic medical data relevant for a first aid treatment, e.g. blood type, diseases and sensitivity to medications. The paramedic that arrives on the scene is equipped with a dedicated application, scans the data from the tag and supplies the soldier with a treatment customized to his or her personal profile.

Among other technologies was a firearm security mechanism. It is a mechanical locking mechanism for the trigger, operated through an application. The technology operates and alerts in unusual incidents, such as a deviation from the zone limits during training in firing ranges.

The hackathon which took place in Be’er Sheva also included soldier-students from the Ben Gurion University, reflecting the partnership between the IDF Technological array, the high-tech industry and academy. The collaboration with the cadets enabled the exposure of the soldier-students to the variety of activities led by the IDF Computer Service Directorate in an era of digital transformation.
