The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has certified a gunshot detection system under the SAFETY Act (Support Anti-terrorism by Fostering Effective Technology). The Guardian Indoor Active Shooter Detection System was developed by Shooter Detection Systems (SDS).

This certification is the highest level of protection offered by DHS. It was legislated by Congress to incentivize manufacturers and sellers of anti-terrorism technologies to continue developing and commercializing technologies that could save lives without being deterred by potential liability risks.

According to the company’s announcement on its website, the certification sets SDS apart as the only gunshot detection solution certified under the SAFETY Act and included on the “Approved Products List for Homeland Security.”

The Guardian System is an effective solution for accurately detecting and reporting gunshots. The system provides immediate and precise location information to first responders in under one second with a proven history of zero false alerts.

SDS gunshot detection systems were developed in conjunction with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and a major defense contractor.

The Guardian system incorporates an acoustic gunshot identification software and combines it with infrared gunfire flash detection to produce a fully automatic and accurate gunshot detection. The system simultaneously detects gunfire and immediately relays this information via floor plan map with shot location, text, e-mail, and other notification pathways to key personnel and building occupants, with no human interpretation required. With security systems integration, the system calls up surveillance cameras in the incident area, initiates lock-down procedures, sends mass notification alerts to desktops and mobile devices, and provides immediate notification to first responders.

The gunshot detection systems are installed nationwide in the US as well as overseas in airports, schools, healthcare facilities, Fortune 500 corporations, municipal buildings, court systems, major utilities, manufacturing plants, high-rise office buildings, and government and private buildings.
