Magen David Adom (MDA) motorcycle unit, which was established in 2006 and has operated for over a decade, operates around 200 motorcycles, including emergency care motorcycles equipped with advanced medical supplies and operated by medics and paramedics volunteering in MDA. By the end of 2016 50 more motorcycles are to be added. MDA personnel on call who are riding motorcycles are called to events alongside the ambulance team, offering life saving medical treatment. Therefore, motorcycling paramedics have undergone a special education program to familiarize themselves with the motorcycle and the principles of riding it in an extensive and upgraded way.

The 75 on-calls who arrived at the first program listened to professional instructors speak about, among other things, proper use of the motorcycle throttle, achieving better control, proper breaking, and spatial vision while answering emergency calls. After the theoretical part, the participants got to practice this important information.

MDA’s National Road Safety Officer, Bezalel Avraham, said that “this program was meant to give the riders further experience driving in urban areas under rough conditions, enhancing maneuvering capabilities, using motor power, spatial vision, correct use of mirrors, keeping steady in any type of operational riding on any type of road, correctly transferring balance and observing the target, minimizing risks and enhancing judgement. This is a good and important program which improves decision making capability.”

MDA CEO Eli Bin said: “MDA’s motorcycle on-call team has a crucial part in arriving fast to the scene and saving lives. We are and will keep on doing whatever we can to offer our on-calls the best information and tools for controlling their motorcycle and I am confident that these programs and others will help us greatly in saving lives.”
