At this hour security forces in Belgium are trying to understand what exactly happened at the Brussel airport but all signs point to a terror attack.

Two explosions were heard this morning at around 9:00 (Israel time) around the international airport in Brussel, capital of Belgium, and several people were killed. There is a suspicion that this is a terror attack. The airport has been closed, all flights cancelled, and people were evacuated.

Not long after the explosions unconfirmed reports were spreading suggesting 11 dead, but the official report by the Belgian police reports 1 dead and 10 wounded. Belgian news agency Belga reported that before the explosions gunshots could be heard, as well as shouts in Arabic at the airport.

Brussel has become in recent months the terror capital of Europe. According to Belgian police, the terror attacks in Paris were planned in Brussel, and the escaped terrorist Salah Abdeslam hid in its streets.

In Molenbeek, a suburb of Brussel, several cells of ISIS and other terrorist groups are operational, according to some intelligence sources.

The Belgians couldn’t decrease the number of fighters who left to join ISIS in Syria and Iraq, and authorities are panicked about returning fighters bringing with them more attacks, like the ones in Paris. Out of all the countries in Western Europe, Belgium has the highest rate of foreign fighters in Syria compared to the size of population.

“Terrorists of different organizations have found a comfortable operation ground in Belgium and are working full-force as base for terror activity in other countries as well,” said an Israeli counter-terror expert this morning.
