As summer 2014 draws near the Israeli fire fighting services published a list of fire safety recommendations. The focus this year is on securing cooking gas containers, in addition to containers of fuels, hazardous materials and pesticides.

The Israeli Fire Fighting and Rescue Authority recommends keeping the hazardous containers carefully maintained, keeping the area around them clear and installing fire safety devices in sensitive locations.

Additional recommendations:

  • Establishing local emergency teams for quick, initial response to fires, before fire fighters arrive
  • Establishing 10-foot wide isolation bands around areas such as fields, orchards and various facilities in order to stop fires from spreading
  • Removing scrap irons from the vicinity of residential buildings and private homes
  • Installing proper access paths for easy fire hydrants and other means of fire fighting
  • Strictly following safety regulations in pesticide warehouses
  • Never storing hazardous materials in agricultural areas, back yards and public areas

When reporting a fire people should report the exact location and type of fire, the extent of the fire , local access paths, all in addition to appointing a contact who will be in charge of communicating with the fire fighters. The public’s fire safety awareness should be improved through emergency instruction and drilling.
