The department’s Science and Technology Directorate released a request for information Feb. 11 to guide the development of better advanced imaging technology allowing security officers to see items concealed beneath multiple layers of clothing.

According to Fierce Homeland Security passengers at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints have to remove outer layers of clothing, like coats and shoes, before entering advanced imaging technology (AIT) AIT machines. DHS wants the new technology to detect through at least two layers of clothing.
