Long-range precision weapons have become increasingly important for militaries seeking to strike targets while keeping launch platforms outside heavily defended areas. The challenge is not simply developing missiles with sufficient range and accuracy, but producing them quickly and affordably enough to maintain large inventories during prolonged conflicts. That has created growing demand for new cruise missiles designed with scalable production in mind.

A relatively new entrant to this field has now moved into live-fire testing. Covenant Industries conducted the first public demonstration of its Anthem long-range cruise missile on August 6th, 2026, launching the weapon from an expeditionary test site near Tan-Tan in southern Morocco.

The event was not an operational deployment or a complete validation of the missile’s capabilities. Instead, it provided engineers and military personnel with an opportunity to collect data from the system under field conditions and identify areas requiring further development.

During the demonstration, teams evaluated several elements surrounding the launch. Communications equipment was tested, while engineers assessed the maneuverability and handling of the missile’s wings, wheels and launch trolley. Personnel also collected weather and targeting information that can be compared with the missile’s performance and incorporated into future testing.

Public technical information about Anthem remains limited. Covenant has positioned the weapon as a lower-cost, long-range cruise missile intended to support production at scale, but has not disclosed key specifications such as its range, speed, guidance architecture, warhead or propulsion system. The live-fire event therefore provides evidence that the program has reached field testing, rather than confirmation of its eventual operational performance.

The launch also marked the first live-fire demonstration at the new Africa Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC). U.S. and Moroccan military personnel worked alongside the development team during the test.

The testing process itself reflects a broader shift in defense development. Missile programs traditionally face lengthy waits for access to specialized military ranges, slowing the transition from prototypes to repeated field trials. A new U.S. Army initiative is intended to give private developers faster access to five testing locations in the United States and partner countries, with a target of arranging range access within 30 days. This was the first company to use the program at the Moroccan facility.

For defense planners, lower-cost long-range weapons could provide another option for building deeper precision-strike inventories without relying exclusively on established high-end missiles. Interest in the missile has already extended beyond the United States, with Germany reportedly evaluating the company while examining alternatives for long-range strike capabilities.

The next challenge will be more demanding than completing a first demonstration. This missile will need further testing, validation and integration before it can become an operational weapon. Still, the Morocco launch represents a concrete step from a largely undisclosed development effort toward a missile that can now be evaluated under realistic military conditions.
