The rapid spread of military drones has created a growing problem for air-defense forces. Many attack drones are inexpensive to produce, yet they are often intercepted using missiles that cost far more than the threats they destroy. This imbalance has prompted defense companies to develop smaller, lower-cost interceptors capable of defeating drones without exhausting air-defense budgets or missile stockpiles.
Canadian company North Vector Dynamics has introduced one such solution with the CM-70, a lightweight precision-guided interceptor that weighs roughly the same as a laptop computer. Designed specifically for engaging aerial threats, the missile combines compact dimensions with precision guidance and can be launched from multiple platforms, offering a flexible option for counter-drone operations.
It measures approximately 0.9 meters in length and can engage targets at distances of up to 3.5 kilometers while reaching speeds of around 900 km/h. Rather than relying on GPS or radio-frequency guidance, the missile uses semi-active laser guidance. In this approach, the target is illuminated by a laser designator, and the missile homes in on the reflected laser energy until impact. Because it does not depend on satellite navigation or continuous radio communication with the launcher, the system is less vulnerable to GPS jamming or radio-frequency interference.
According to NextGenDefense, another notable feature is its forward-firing warhead, which concentrates its blast ahead of the missile instead of distributing it evenly in all directions. This design increases the probability of destroying small, fast-moving aerial targets by directing more energy toward the drone during the final moments of interception.
The missile has also been designed for operational flexibility. It can be launched from ground positions, military vehicles or airborne platforms, allowing operators to integrate the same interceptor into different layers of an air-defense network rather than developing separate weapons for each platform.
The growing use of one-way attack drones and loitering munitions has increased demand for interceptors that better match the cost and size of these threats. Smaller guided missiles such as this are intended to complement larger air-defense systems, reserving high-end interceptors for cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and other more demanding targets.
Beyond its technical characteristics, this reflects a broader shift in defense procurement toward scalable and economically sustainable air defense. As drone attacks become more frequent, maintaining sufficient interceptor inventories will depend not only on performance but also on manufacturing speed and affordability. Lightweight systems like this could become an important part of layered counter-drone defenses by providing a practical option for engaging small aerial threats without relying exclusively on larger and more expensive missile systems.
