A New Missile Could Give Soldiers More Time to Stop Drone Attacks

The growing use of drones, cruise missiles and low-flying aircraft is putting renewed pressure on short-range air defense systems. Soldiers operating near the front line need weapons that can quickly detect, lock onto and engage fast-moving aerial threats before they reach friendly forces. As these threats become faster and more maneuverable, many existing man-portable air defense systems are approaching the limits of their original design.

Raytheon’s Next Generation Short Range Interceptor (NGSRI) is being developed to address that challenge. The company recently completed a series of demonstration tests in which multiple missiles successfully detected, tracked and intercepted simulated airborne targets, validating the system’s guidance and engagement capabilities.

Like the widely used Stinger missile, the interceptor is designed as a man-portable air defense system (MANPADS) that can be carried and operated by a single soldier. However, the new interceptor incorporates several updated technologies intended to improve both target acquisition and engagement range.

The system combines a soldier-portable Command Launch Assembly with a missile equipped with a precision-optics seeker. After launch, the seeker autonomously tracks the target, following the same fire-and-forget concept used by current-generation MANPADS. This allows the operator to seek cover or prepare for another engagement immediately after firing rather than continuing to guide the missile.

Powering the interceptor is a highly loaded grain solid rocket motor supplied by Lockheed Martin. According to NextGenDefense, the propulsion system enables the missile to engage threats at greater distances than current shoulder-fired systems, although specific performance figures have not been released. During the recent demonstration, the missile reportedly acquired targets more quickly while successfully completing multiple intercepts against simulated threats.

The interceptor is being developed as the intended successor to the FIM-92 Stinger, one of the world’s most widely deployed shoulder-fired air defense missiles. Weighing approximately 15 kilograms, the abovementioned missile has long provided infantry units with protection against helicopters and low-flying aircraft using an infrared seeker cooled before launch by a battery-cooling unit. It typically engages targets at ranges of 4 to 5 kilometers and altitudes of up to 3,800 meters.

As aerial threats continue to evolve, next-generation MANPADS are expected to play an increasingly important role in layered air defense. Systems such as this are designed to give dismounted troops an effective means of countering not only traditional aircraft but also the expanding range of unmanned aerial systems operating at low altitude. The successful demonstration represents another step toward fielding a more capable short-range interceptor while preserving the portability that has made shoulder-fired air defense systems a key battlefield asset for decades.
