Baidu, one of China’s leading technology companies, has unveiled a new artificial intelligence (AI) reasoning model, X1, in a bid to enhance its competitive edge in the fast-evolving AI landscape. This announcement follows the rise of DeepSeek, a Chinese startup that disrupted the market in January with its highly efficient, open-source AI model. In response, Baidu aims to offer an equally capable solution at a lower cost, positioning its new X1 model as a direct challenger to DeepSeek’s recent success.

Along with the launch of the X1 model, Baidu introduced an updated version of its foundation model, Ernie 4.5, which the company claims tops OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 on various benchmarks. The company also made its AI chatbot, Ernie Bot, available to individual users for free two weeks ahead of its initial schedule. Previously, access to the Ernie Bot required a subscription, but the move to make it free reflects Baidu’s effort to stay ahead in a fiercely competitive AI market.

The new X1 reasoning model features enhanced capabilities in understanding, planning, reflection, and evolution, according to Baidu, making it a robust tool for a variety of AI-driven applications. The rapid rollout of these new AI models comes as Baidu faces stiff competition from several other tech giants in China.

Baidu’s commitment to releasing its Ernie models as open-source by June 30 further intensifies the race, with other companies scrambling to integrate open-source technologies into their products. Baidu’s aggressive strategy of offering both high-performance models and free access to consumers could reshape the competitive dynamics in China and beyond. By focusing on lowering costs while enhancing capabilities, Baidu not only aims to challenge leading international players but also to solidify its foothold in the rapidly growing AI sector. The coming months will reveal whether this bold approach will allow Baidu to outpace its competitors and maintain its edge in a market that is quickly becoming more crowded and competitive.
