A new UK-led operation, dubbed Nordic Warden, has been launched by the multinational Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), marking a significant leap in the protection of undersea cables and critical infrastructure from potential threats. This initiative uses artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor movements of suspicious vessels, particularly focusing on Russia’s shadow fleet, which has been associated in recent incidents of sabotage.

Launched last week, Nordic Warden is a direct response to reports of damage to the Estlink undersea cable in the Baltic Sea, an event linked to a Russian oil tanker. The operation’s centerpiece is an advanced AI system capable of assessing threats posed by vessels entering high-risk areas. According to the MoD, by analyzing data from multiple sources, including the Automatic Identification System (AIS), which ships use to broadcast their position, the system calculates the potential danger of each vessel.

A critical feature of the system is its ability to track specific vessels, particularly those known to be part of Russia’s shadow fleet. These vessels are pre-registered in the AI system, which allows for real-time monitoring as they approach sensitive regions. If any suspicious activity is detected, the system can instantly alert JEF members and NATO allies, ensuring swift responses.

The UK Ministry of Defence has emphasized that Nordic Warden showcases how innovative technologies are enhancing European security while supporting NATO operations. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reiterated the importance of protecting vital national infrastructure, including undersea cables, as part of his government’s broader security strategy.

The operation follows growing concerns over the security of undersea cables, with Finland taking firm action after the alleged sabotage of cables in the Baltic Sea in late December 2024. The country has already seized a tanker linked to the incident and is wrapping up investigations.

Nordic Warden highlights the JEF’s commitment to strengthening defense measures, with its ten-nation membership, working together to safeguard key infrastructure in a rapidly evolving security landscape.
