US-based cybersecurity firm IronNet and counter-drone technology company Asterion Systems have teamed up to test the Hitchhiker interceptor drone on the Ukrainian frontlines, evaluating its effectiveness in real combat scenarios. This collaboration aims to address the growing threat of suicide drones, and provide a more cost-effective solution compared to traditional air defense systems such as the Patriot.

The Hitchhiker drone, an electric multi-role interceptor, combines cutting-edge technology from both companies. Powered by IronNet’s real-time cyber threat detection tool, named Iron Dome, the Hitchhiker is capable of tracking and intercepting enemy drones with remarkable precision. It boasts a range of 200 kilometers and can achieve speeds of up to 450 km/h. Launched by Asterion’s Perimaster C4 system, the drone uses long-range sensor data to position itself behind incoming threats, offering visual inspection, mitigation, or return-to-base capabilities.

This advanced system is designed to provide heightened situational awareness by aggregating data from multiple sensors, enabling the detection of suspect UAVs before they reach critical areas. The system’s flexibility is further enhanced by the ability to launch the drones from both fixed and mobile platforms.

One of the key advantages of the Hitchhiker is its integration with cybersecurity. In the event of a cyberattack targeting defense systems, the Hitchhiker can continue to function, tracking, targeting, and neutralizing enemy UAVs. This capability sets it apart from traditional counter-drone systems that may be vulnerable to cyber interference.

While tests have been successful, it remains uncertain whether the Ukrainian forces will officially adopt the Hitchhiker interceptor. The partnership between IronNet and Asterion, announced at the Bahrain International Airshow, marks a significant milestone in developing integrated defense strategies combining cybersecurity and counter-drone technology.

Together, the companies aim to enhance air and space security, offering a robust solution to protect critical infrastructure against evolving threats.
