Public safety drones are an increasingly important sector in the drone industry. There is a growing need for better and more accessible training for public safety personnel. It could be a critical factor in improving public perception of drone use by emergency services, as standardized training helps personnel to work within a common framework of safety and public communications.

A new move will advance standardized global training of public safety personnel. The strategic initiative is designed to standardize the training and use of unmanned aircraft systems and related technology across the public safety and emergency services sectors around the world.

According to dronelife.com, an agreement with this regard was signed between ASTM International, expertizing in transparent standards development, and the DRONERESPONDERS Public Safety Alliance in the US, an official program of AIRT (Airborne Int’l Response Team).

The new program, Public Safety UAS STI, “will provide public safety UAS training providers with a third-party evaluation of their curriculum for conformance to applicable ASTM standards”. ” Programs that meet or exceed UAS STI will receive a certificate and digital emblem from DRONERESPONDERS and ASTM confirming they have been approved as a Public Safety UAS (STI) Approved Training Provider.”

According to the organizations’ announcement, the need for standardized UAS equipment and training for first responders and emergency services professionals has been well researched and validated by DRONERESPONDERS over the past year.  During this time, ASTM International collaborated with key stakeholders to develop the most robust set of UAS operational standards available to date.
