US Space Force Transition Underway

President Donald Trump’s plan to establish the United States Space Force as the sixth branch of the American military is slowly making way. Soldiers, assets, and units from the United States Air Force are gradually beginning to transition to the Space Force, with the 14th Air Force beginning one of the first to begin the transitioning process.

Stationed at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, the 14th Air Force has now been renamed. The military has announced that the 14th Air Force will now be known as Space Operations Command, or SPOC (remember star trek?).

“People count on us to make a difference – to provide a space-enabled combat edge to the warfighters that keep our country, our allies, and our partners safe,” said Major General John E. Shaw, commander of SPOC. “We will not let them down”.

The majority of missions previously held by the 14th Air Force will now be assumed by SPOC. SPOC will also be responsible for space domain awareness, space electronic warfare, satellite communications, missile warnings, nuclear detonation detection, environmental monitoring, navigation warfare, and military intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR).

Military.com reports that approximately 16 thousand active duty and civilian personnel who used to be under the wing of the Air Force Space Command have been assigned to the Space Force. One of these personnel is General Jay Raymond, the newly appointed first chief of Space Operations. Appointed by Trump, Raymond will report to the secretary of the Air Force and will sit as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Over the next year and a half, more and more Air Force officials will begin to transfer branches and become members of the United States Space Force.

Raymond has mentioned that there are several plans in motion to redesignate Air Force units and bases that deal with “space only” missions to the Space Force. Air Force bases will now be renamed to Space Force bases. For example, Peterson Air Force Base may now be called Peterson Space Force Base.
