It seems as though the Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW) are getting closer to being operational and in US service. For the first time, Textron has recently publicly showcased the NGSW. The futuristic weapon was introduced in two different variants, the Next Generation Squad Weapon- Automatic Rifle (NGSW-AR) and the Next Generation Squad Weapon- Rifle (NGSW-R). The automatic rifle is intended to replace the M-249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW), and the NGSW-R will be deployed instead of the M4/M41 Carbine.

The main objective of the NGSW is to grant American soldiers weapons that increase their lethality, mobility, and situational awareness. In order to best achieve this objective, Textron has built a team of experienced weapon and ammunition developers such as Heckler & Koch and Olin Winchester.

Defence-blog.com reports that Textron is very satsified with the team they have chosen and that they are honored to support and manufacture the next generation of squad weapons for the United States military.

Textron has also announced that it has been chosen as one of three organizations to deliver the NGSWs based on the company’s cased telescoped (CT) technology. The company will ship 43 6.8 mm CT NGSW-Automatic Rifles and 53 CT NGSW-Rifles, as well as over 845 thousand rounds of cased telescoped ammunition over a 27 month period.

Some variants of the NGSW will be equipped with advanced technologies such as smart targeting, ballistic calculations, wireless communications, and tracking capabilities.

The NGSW is expected to be operational and in the field either by 2021 or 2022.
