Training for the US Navy is considered to be one of the most difficult things someone ever has to go through. Some believe the physical standards set for a Navy seal are way too high. The concern is that fitness tests have been prodding sailors to take drastic, unhealthy measures to try to get through the Navy’s assessment

Shouldn’t there be another way of knowing if someone really has what it takes to be a Navy seal. Juan M. Garcia III, former Navy top official, is suggesting the idea of having seals wear tracking devices that monitor their health and fitness, as stated by navytimes.com.

The idea would be a shift from this twice-a-year crucible, with all the attendant dangers that go with that. A sailor’s fitness level would be tested through a year-round culture of fitness. Once the year comes to an end, analytics would then become the deciding factor to know if a sailor really qualifies. With this wearable technology, sailors can prepare how they feel is best for them. Soldiers will no longer have to  go through excruciating tests, rather just train at the rate they’d like to. As long as the analytics meet the standards at the end, sailors will be qualified to become Navy seals.

One very useful aspect equipped with the wearable tracking device, is the ability for sailors to simply download their data to their command fitness leaders at practically any time. The sailors could then see the progress they have made and learn what they need to do in order to meet the standards.

To determine a sailor’s cardio-vascular strength and endurance, the tracking device reveals the ‘VO2 max lung capacity.’ With all these features equipped to the tracking device, sailor’s will know at all times what they need to be doing in order to improve and become certified, according to military.com.

With this new technology, sailors will no longer have to go through severe and harsh training. Sailors will become even more fit at a pace they feel is right for them. Once the analytics show that the sailor is ready, they will then make their way to the Great Lakes Recruit Training Camp.
