Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has sold its Drone Guard , system for drone detection, identification and flight disruption to some undisclosed customers.

According to ELTA, the IAI subsidiary, the system is fully operational and has been sold to some customers. The Israeli company identifies a growing concern about possible terror attacks on critical sites using small UAV’s carrying explosives.

The Drone Guard is capable of detecting a small UAV from a distance of 3 KM. After detection by radar the threat is identified by an optical sensor and then the disruption unit is activated  and either stop the UAV a fixed area until its fuel or battery are out or sends it back to the launch point.

The use of small drones has increased dramatically over the years, making them a potential threat to critical infrastructures, other aircraft and homeland security (HLS), due to their small size, low speed and low flight altitude.

These drones may be used for a number of reasons, including hostile purposes such as intelligence gathering, smuggling, or as weaponized platforms. In addition, they are difficult to detect or disrupt due to their low visibility and low Radar Cross Section (RCS).

Companies all over the world have identified the need and are developing similar systems. However, the IAI – thanks to the “building blocks” it already has, i.e. radar systems and other sensors – has been one of the first companies to market an operational system.

It is evaluated that within the next few years the drones threat would  grow, and the resulting demand for defense systems stationed around public places and critical infrastructures would increase.

The competition in this market will increase considerably, however at the IAI they are certain that their system is based on a proven technology.
