After Hungary has ensured border control in dealing with the influx of migrants knocking on its doors and Croatia, following its example, refused to let in the mass of migrants, it is now Slovenia’s turn to receive a wave of people trying to get past the country’s borders and make their way into the European continent. As Croatia diverts the flow of migrants to north, Slovenia is struggling to cope. Germany now plans to send police to Slovenia to assist authorities, a German newspaper has reported.

This drone footage shows thousands of refugees moving towards the Slovenian border settlement of Rigonce, after crossing into the country from Croatia. The border is a significant checkpoint on the journey towards south-east Europe.

A reported 11,500 refugees arrived in Croatia on Saturday alone with a further 60,000 refugees entering Slovenia in the last ten days.

Slovenian Prime Minister, Miro Cerar has warned European leaders that the European Union will “start falling apart” if a substantial plan is not in place within the next few weeks. The country has threatened to close its borders to stem the seemingly endless flow of migrants, as tens of thousands continue to stream in. Considering the option of raising a large fence along the border, The small nation would become the second country in Europe to erect a razor-wire fence in response to the crisis, following Hungary’s lead last month.

The cost of erecting a fence along Slovenia’s 670km-long border with Croatia would be about €80 million, but Cerar said: “If these big waves of migrants just continue to come to Slovenia, it will be impossible to carry this on.It’s just unbearable, we just cannot accept this, it is too much.”
