This Drone Doesn’t Just Follow Fighter Jets — It Fights With Them

Air forces around the world are increasingly looking for ways to expand combat capability without placing additional pilots in harm’s way. Modern fighter aircraft already manage enormous workloads involving sensing, targeting, communications, and electronic warfare. At the same time, advanced air-defense systems are making operations in contested airspace more challenging and costly.

One emerging solution is the concept of the drone wingman—an autonomous aircraft that flies alongside crewed fighters, extending their reach while taking on high-risk missions. A newly unveiled platform (U760 Ravenstorm) is designed specifically for that role, combining strike capabilities, air-to-air engagement potential, and electronic warfare functions in a single unmanned aircraft.

The system is classified as an Uncrewed Collaborative Combat Aircraft (UCCA), meaning it is intended to operate as part of a team (with an Airbus) rather than as a standalone drone. With a wingspan of approximately 10 meters and a length of 13 meters, the aircraft is designed to accompany fighter jets on complex missions across multiple domains.

According to Interesting Engineering, its mission set includes air-to-ground strikes using precision-guided munitions, air-to-air engagements against hostile aircraft and drones, and electronic warfare operations. In the electronic warfare role, the aircraft can carry systems designed to disrupt enemy sensors, suppress air defenses, and conduct non-kinetic attacks through jamming rather than physical weapons.

A key feature is the autonomous mission system that serves as the aircraft’s digital core. The platform relies on an AI-supported software architecture that enables autonomous operation while allowing integration into larger combat formations. This architecture is designed to support cooperative missions in which crewed and uncrewed aircraft share tasks and information in real time.

From a defense perspective, collaborative combat aircraft are becoming one of the most significant trends in military aviation. Instead of deploying only crewed fighters, future air operations are expected to involve mixed formations where autonomous systems perform reconnaissance, electronic attack, strike, or decoy missions while human pilots remain focused on command decisions and complex engagements.

The platform was unveiled alongside a broader family of unmanned systems that includes reconnaissance drones, cargo platforms, drone interceptors (U680 Bird of Prey), and long-endurance intelligence aircraft. Together, they reflect a growing shift toward integrated ecosystems of autonomous air systems operating across multiple mission types.

As air forces prepare for increasingly networked and contested environments, drone wingmen are moving from concept to operational reality.
