The U.S. Air Force has taken a significant step forward in aviation technology with the delivery of its first Midnight electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft from Archer Aviation. This delivery marks a pivotal moment in the USAF’s efforts to explore and integrate advanced dual-use technologies through its AFWERX Agility Prime initiative.
Midnight, designed for quick, back-to-back flights with minimal recharging time, is a piloted aircraft capable of carrying four passengers. It represents a leap in electric aviation technology, boasting speeds exceeding 100 mph and a payload capacity of 1,000 lbs. The aircraft’s receipt follows the Department of Defense’s approval of Midnight’s military airworthiness assessment, which confirms its readiness for extensive flight testing by AFWERX.
The aircraft’s arrival at Salinas saw USAF personnel collaborating closely with Archer’s flight test team. Together, they conducted simulated missions including medical evacuations, cargo transport, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations. These tests aim to validate Midnight’s performance and adaptability for various military applications. According to the team, the Midnight aircraft has the potential to significantly enhance the Air Force’s operational capabilities.
According to Interesting Engineering, Midnight’s design features vertical takeoff and landing capabilities, a proprietary electric powertrain, and a low noise profile, making it well-suited for military operations. It is expected to offer a safer, more cost-effective, and quieter alternative to traditional internal combustion engine aircraft, thereby enhancing rapid response and operational effectiveness across various mission profiles.
In June, Archer Aviation announced that Midnight successfully completed its transition flight, achieving speeds over 100 mph. During this flight, Midnight demonstrated its ability to transition from vertical takeoff to wing-borne flight and back to vertical landing,
AFWERX is the innovation arm of the Air Force. It brings innovative technology from small companies and startups across the US to address pressing defense challenges.
