Malicious drones are already a well-known threat to public security. However, it is a drone swarm attack that constitutes the next stage – a pre-programmed swarm of drones, attacking simultaneously from several directions. The threat presented by a drone swarm is much more extensive than the risk from an individual drone, due to its capability to cause considerable damage to critical infrastructures.

Drones stand out among other threats in their innovative employment and destructive potential. Drones equipped with cameras and other sensors can identify potential targets and relay that information to the rest of the swarm. Real-time information collection makes drone swarms well-suited for searching for forces over broad areas. A surprise swarm attack might also have important psychological consequences. In fact, stopping a swarm is not simply a matter of driving enough missiles or bullets at it; instead, the swarm has to be outsmarted, says Isaac Kaminer, a drone swarm expert and an engineering professor at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School.

Armed forces and enforcement agencies that acquire counter-drone systems test these platforms’ interception capabilities against off-the-shelf drones, while in fact, what is required is coping with a pre-programmed swarm of drones. In a world’s first, Israeli company Swarm Robotics offers to train agencies in tactics against a drone attack in order to prepare them for countering a drone swarm in the real world.

Established a year ago, the company participates in the INNOFENSE Innovation Center operated by iHLS and MAF’AT – Israel Ministry of Defense, where it started developing its counter drone swarm training solution.

This dual-use technology was first launched in the civilian sector, now shifting to military use. The drone operation technology was originally developed by Swarm Robotics for entertainment shows, and it is the only company in Israel to get CAA’s approval for swarm flights. Using a dedicated system for drone swarm control, the company has been performing entertainment drone shows and has already accumulated thousands of operational drone swarm flight hours.

Now, Swarm Robotics is offering an operational exercise with a drone swarm – the only company that provides operational exercises for training against a swarm of tens of drones, including the threat of a suicide drone or explosive drone.

The ground-breaking technology developed by the company provides the possibility to engage a live presentation of a drone swarm.

The technology provides the following capabilities:

  • Staging of enemy swarms
  • Synchronized operation of tens of UAV’s in various scenarios simultaneously
  • Engaging with non-standard, custom-built drones
  • Predefined missions
  • Nighttime operations
  • Operational drone and drone swarm interception training

Dan Bystriysky, the company’s CTO, said: “Drone swarms attack might be a substantial threat, and their use is expected to grow during the next few years. The impact of drones is already reflected in the current Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict in the Caucasus. Our vision is to train agencies in coping with drone swarms.”

Undoubtedly, any army or enforcement agency preparing for future warfare should currently experience genuine counter drone swarming operations. Swarm Robotics’ advanced technology provides the possibility for a live, operational experience.
