Meet the Supersonic Drone Hunter Built for Modern Battlefields

The rapid growth of military drone operations is exposing a major weakness in traditional air defense. While medium-sized unmanned aircraft used for reconnaissance and strike missions are becoming cheaper and more numerous, the missiles used to intercept them often cost far more than the targets themselves. As drone attacks increase in scale, this economic imbalance is driving demand for more affordable interceptor systems that can be produced in large numbers.

X-Bow Systems has introduced one possible solution with Buckler, a supersonic interceptor designed specifically to defeat Group 3 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The company recently completed successful flight testing of the system, validating its propulsion system and overall flight performance ahead of its public debut.

Group 3 drones typically weigh between 25 and 598 kgs, fly below 5,486 meters, and operate at speeds of up to 250 knots. These aircraft are commonly used for intelligence gathering, surveillance and strike missions, placing them beyond the capabilities of many short-range counter-drone systems while remaining too inexpensive to justify using high-cost interceptors.

According to Interesting Engineering, the company addresses this challenge by combining high-speed performance with a simplified, vertically integrated design. It has both the interceptor’s airframe and its solid rocket motor in-house, giving the company direct control over production while reducing dependence on external suppliers. This approach also addresses one of the defense industry’s current bottlenecks, as solid rocket motors have become increasingly difficult to source due to growing global demand for missiles and interceptors.

The recent test campaign included both static-fire testing of the rocket motor and igniter as well as full flight demonstrations. According to the company, these trials confirmed the interceptor’s propulsion performance and overall flight characteristics, bringing the system closer to operational deployment.

Another notable feature is its target cost. The company claims it is designed to cost less than $100,000 per interceptor, making it significantly less expensive than many existing missile systems used against similar aerial threats. The lower price point is intended to make sustained counter-drone operations more economically viable, particularly during prolonged conflicts involving large numbers of unmanned aircraft.

Affordable interceptors are becoming an increasingly important part of layered air defense. Modern forces require different classes of weapons to counter everything from small commercial quadcopters to larger reconnaissance and strike drones. A lower-cost supersonic interceptor fills the gap between short-range counter-drone systems and more expensive surface-to-air missiles, allowing commanders to better match the weapon to the threat.

With flight testing complete and production capabilities already in place, the system represents another step toward scalable air-defense solutions designed to keep pace with the growing use of medium-sized military drones on the battlefield.
