Soldiers in the United States Marines fire support units will soon be able to coordinate mortar, artillery, and naval gunfire via a sturdy field-ready tablet.

The Target Handoff System 2.0 (THSv2) grants Marines the ability to easily establish GPS coordinates to accurately call in offensive strikes. The system connects to the Marine’s communication systems and develops a suite that enables the warfighter to coordinate his efforts with other friendly forces. The THSv2 makes it simple for soldiers to identify and locate targets. Soldiers then can transmit that information via the tablet to fire support platforms and units.

Military.com reports that tactical tablets have slowly began becoming a regular part of the Marine warfighter’s kit, such as the Marine Air-Ground Task Force Common Handheld (MCH). However unlike the MCH, which grants soldiers with added situational awareness, the THSv2 grants soldiers with extra offensive capabilities and data sharing.

Marine officials have noted that ever since THSv2’s fielding, Marines have shown great satisfaction with the system.
