New way to secure the Internet of Things

intenethomeThe meaning of Internet of Things (IoT) is basically a connection of all apects of our lives, anything technological (and not technological) in our private homes and the public space, to the internet. The dangers this network holds are varied and many, and so it entails an effort, alongside the technological progress and the world being wired, to keep security measures on our virtual lives, which in the meantime have become more more connected with our real lives.

Researchers from RUB University in Germany have laboured to develop the PHYSEC system for the security of “things” connected to the internet.

This security technology developed at RUB puts an emphasis on wireless network security and uses, among other things, digital encoding. A first version of the system, which functions very effectively, is already available for use today. The german development is based on any two sides communicating via the wireless network, the side transmitting data and the side receiving it, being synchronized exclusively by means of a random sequence of virtually inimitable numbers which are known only them, without the other devices connected to the network being exposed to that synchronization. That way, the problem arising from all devices being connected to a network by one common sequence is solved. This causes compartmentalization, as even when hostile bodies try and infiltrate one of the encoded connections, the rest of the network is still safe, since every encoding system is seperate. Furthermore, the sequence of numbers keeps changing, which cancels the success of any potential attack on the system.
