China Presents Lunar Lander – With Europe Burning in Background

An innocent mistake or the beginning of a political fiasco? In early November a model of the Chinese lunar lander was presented, with an image of the earth from space in the background. Visitors to the expo featuring the exhibit were surprised to see a nuclear mushroom “brightening” up Europe in the background image.

The Chinese government made no comments on the issue. Epoch Times located the source of the exhibit background: A stock image available for download on the internet. The Chinese display organizers probably looked for an impressive background image and didn’t notice any minor details. Their English was probably not good enough, and they missed the picture’s name: Nuclear Explosion from Space.

The “Yuku” lunar lander was launched on December 1st, landing successfully on December 14th. The meaning of the name is “jade rabbit”, referring to the pet of the Chinese moon goddess Chang-e.
