Israeli Startup Raises $36 Million to Develop a Counter-Drone Swarm System

One of the greatest challenges facing modern air defense is no longer the single drone, but swarms of dozens or even hundreds of unmanned systems operating simultaneously. Such attacks can overwhelm conventional air defense systems, which were originally designed to engage only a limited number of targets at a time. Beyond the operational challenge, they also create an economic dilemma: using expensive interceptors against low-cost drones can quickly deplete defensive resources.

Against this backdrop, Israeli defense-tech startup Skapion has completed a $36 million seed funding round, which is an unusually large amount for a company founded only in late 2025. The capital will be used to expand engineering teams, advance system development, integration, and testing, and support collaboration with defense and government organizations in Israel, the United States, and other countries.

The company is developing what it describes as a Native Counter-Swarm System, which is a platform designed from the ground up to counter coordinated drone swarm attacks, rather than adapting an existing solution intended for single-drone engagements. This means the system’s architecture is built to handle large numbers of simultaneous threats, prioritize targets in real time, and continue operating even in environments where communications are degraded or disrupted.

According to the company, the development effort is focused on three primary objectives: increasing the number of targets that can be engaged simultaneously, reducing the cost per interception, and enhancing the system’s level of autonomy. However, the company has disclosed few technical details. It has not revealed whether the solution relies on lasers, electronic warfare, interceptor drones, or a combination of multiple defensive layers, nor has it released performance specifications or test results.

Demand for technologies of this kind has accelerated following the war in Ukraine and the growing use of one-way attack drones and coordinated drone swarms in other conflict zones. These developments have highlighted the need for future air defense systems capable of making rapid decisions while engaging large numbers of threats simultaneously and efficiently managing interception resources.

The company’s structure also offers insight into its strategic direction; the company is recruiting engineers specializing in electronics, robotics, software, aerospace, and autonomous systems as it works to develop a comprehensive solution for one of the most pressing challenges facing the modern battlefield.
