A revolutionary new material, Composite Metal Foam (CMF), is poised to transform various industries, from aerospace to military and even transportation. After years of rigorous testing and development, this groundbreaking material is now ready for full-scale production, thanks to Advanced Materials Manufacturing (AMM). Created by Afsaneh Rabiei, an engineer at North Carolina State University, CMF has proven to be both incredibly strong and lightweight, providing unparalleled protection and performance across multiple applications.

CMF combines the robustness of metals like steel, titanium, and aluminum with the added benefit of being lightweight, thanks to its unique structure of hollow metal bubbles embedded within the metal matrix. This configuration makes CMF not only highly effective at absorbing kinetic energy but also significantly lighter than traditional materials like steel. For instance, according to Interesting Engineering’s citing of a 2019 study, vehicle armor made from CMF can withstand .50 caliber rounds, including both ball and armor-piercing types, with protection comparable to conventional steel armor—but at less than half the weight. This reduction in weight leads to improvements in vehicle performance and fuel efficiency without compromising safety.

Beyond its ballistic capabilities, CMF also excels at heat insulation. Studies have demonstrated that CMF provides superior thermal resistance compared to solid metals. In one experiment, CMF took twice as long to heat up under intense flame exposure compared to stainless steel, owing to the air pockets within its structure. This heat resistance makes CMF an ideal material for a range of applications requiring protection against extreme temperatures, such as hazardous material storage, spacecraft, and fire-resistant structures.

Furthermore, CMF has shown significant potential in radiation shielding. Proven effective against X-rays and gamma rays, it could play a pivotal role in protecting sensitive materials in space exploration, nuclear facilities, and other environments with high radiation exposure.

With its diverse capabilities and cutting-edge design, CMF is set to revolutionize industries by offering superior performance, safety, and efficiency. Now in production, AMM is accepting orders for custom CMF solutions, allowing for tailored designs that meet specific engineering needs.
