Mercedes-Benz is teaming up with Google to introduce a groundbreaking conversational AI system for its MBUX Virtual Assistant, offering drivers an entirely new way to interact with their vehicles. This new feature, powered by Google Cloud’s Automotive AI Agent, utilizes the latest Gemini model built on Vertex AI to provide real-time, natural-language communication between drivers and their cars.
The AI system is tailored specifically for the automotive industry, delivering detailed and personalized information from Google Maps in a conversational manner. This means drivers can ask their vehicle to guide them to nearby points of interest or provide information about restaurants, landmarks, and more, all in an easy, natural way.
One of the key innovations of this system is its ability to manage multi-turn dialogues. The assistant can remember the context of previous interactions, allowing users to ask follow-up questions without needing to start from scratch. This continuous conversation flow creates a more intuitive and dynamic user experience.
The new AI assistant will debut in the 2025 Mercedes-Benz CLA series and is expected to be integrated into additional models in the future. Drivers and passengers will benefit from fast, accurate information delivered within seconds, thanks to the integration of sophisticated location data with generative AI. The system is designed to respond with up-to-date information, ensuring a seamless experience that enhances both navigation and overall in-car convenience.
This development is part of a broader effort by Mercedes-Benz to integrate more advanced AI technologies into its vehicles. Previously, the company tested an AI-powered voice assistant using OpenAI’s ChatGPT and has ongoing collaborations in China with ByteDance to develop in-car AI systems. With this new partnership with Google, Mercedes-Benz is setting a new standard for AI-driven technology in the automotive industry, providing drivers with a smarter, more personalized driving experience.
