U.S Senate Sophisticated cyberattack tools available underground to anyoneSeveral federal law enforcement and computer security officials told a Senate panel that increasingly sophisticated malware and other tools designed to infiltrate information systems are available to any individual, organization or country at relatively lower costs through underground markets.

According to Fierce HomeLand Security, during a Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs hearing on enhancing cybersecurity coordination in the financial sector, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said there’s speculation that North Korea was behind the breach of Sony Pictures.

Senator Schumer wondered how many other countries besides China, Russia, the United States and Iran have such capabilities.

“I think it was frightening to people the specter that it might’ve been North Korea that did this,” he said, adding that if North Korea is capable of a sophisticated attack then “anyone can do this.”

Social Security numbers and other information and documents of more than 47,000 current, former employees and Hollywood stars were stolen. There’s widespread speculation that North Korea may have conducted the attack in retribution for the upcoming Sony film called “The Interview” in which the leading characters are charged with assassinating North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The government, however, has officially denied responsibility for the breach.
