A drone delivery company has recently become the first company in the United States to operate commercial drone delivery services direct to homes. With an extended Air Carrier Certificate from the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), Wing has received special permission to oversee multiple drones making commercial deliveries to the public.

Wing, in collaboration with several other companies such as FedEx, Walgreens, and Sugar Magnolia, are the first businesses to offer local air delivery in the United States.

Once customers order from Walgreens or Sugar Magnolia via the Wing app, lightweight drones get sent directly to their homes. Uasvision.com further reports that similarly, customers can opt in to receive scheduled FedEx Express deliveries by drone.

Once the drone reaches the customer, the aircraft will lower the package to a designated location in the yard or driveway. Once the package has been lowered, the drone will fly back to its “nest”.

The drone replaces “last mile delivery”, meaning that instead of having a delivery truck ship the purchased item for its last few miles, an electrically powered drone will ship the product to the customer, therefore saving gas, money, and time.
