“Keiler” by the German company Rheinmetall is a next-generation armored breaching vehicle (ABV) designed to enhance battlefield operations by quickly clearing mines and enabling troop advancements. Weighing 63 tons, the Keiler boasts a top speed of 64 Km/h and can cross trenches over 2.5 meters wide.

Equipped with a heavy-duty rotor-powered mine flail system, the Keiler efficiently creates safe lanes for troops who are going through enemy minefields. Its rotating mine-clearing elements allow it to eliminate hidden mines swiftly, ensuring a secure path for both vehicles and troops.

In August, Rheinmetall showcased the Keiler NG’s capabilities at a live demonstration attended by approximately 100 guests from armed forces, procurement authorities, and industry representatives at the Bergen military training area, according to Interesting Engineering. One highlight was the use of the Pearson mine plow, which measures around 4 meters wide and can clear mines at a remarkable speed of 250 meters per minute. Additionally, the vehicle can rapidly swap the mine plow for a dozer blade to fill trenches, handle anti-tank obstacles, or create defensive positions as needed.

The demonstration’s most impressive feature was the rocket-supported ‘Plofadder’ detonation cord system. Launched from the Keiler, the Plofadder can breach a path 160 meters long and nine meters wide through minefields in minutes. Developed for fast-moving attack groups, the system consists of a long insensitive line charge deployed over the minefield by a rocket before detonation, allowing for swift clearance that enables continued momentum.

First unveiled at the Eurosatory 2024 trade fair in Paris, the Keiler NG also includes an integrated crane, a ROSY rapid obscurant system, and a Natter 12.7 remotely controlled weapon station for self-defense. Operable by just two personnel, Rheinmetall is exploring the addition of remote-controlled features and an active protection system for enhanced functionality.

Overall, the Keiler represents a significant advancement in military technology, poised to revolutionize mine clearance operations on the battlefield.
