With the help of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine deep learning, scientists at Florida Atlantic University have “brought to life” a robotic canine named Astro. The robotic dog with a 3D printed head, has not only been designed to look and act like a dog, but also to think like one too. Astro has been designed to listen to voice commands and learn from them. With the help of a deep neural network, Astro is capable of performing authentic, “dog-like” tasks.

With the help of sensors, radar, cameras, and microphones, Astro’s potential for military, police, and civilian use is astro-nomical. Eventually, Astro will be capable of detecting weapons and explosives residue and alert police, security, and military personnel. 

The robotic dog will also help with providing reconnaissance for military operations, as well as provide search and rescue assistance.

Currently, Astro is still a puppy, capable of responding to simple commands such as “sit”, “stand”, and “lie down”. Within time, Astro should be capable of responding to hand signals, understanding different languages, coordinate abilities with UAVs and other autonomous devices, identify and distinguish between human faces, and much more.

In the civilian field, Astro will be able to provide assistance as a service dog for visually impaired and physically disabled people. The dog can also provide medical monitoring for people in less favorable conditions.

Astro has been designed to engage with the world in real-time, meaning that this robotic canine will be able to navigate through a new environment, responding to scenarios, and saving lives.

Techxplore.com mentions how Astro will also be linked to a database of faces, sounds, and smells, that will help the dog recognize certain people, chemicals, and objects when detected.

As AI and machine learning advances, more and more human and dog like autonomous robots are being developed in an effort to assist humans and save humans from harm.
