The technology of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (APNR) has become an essential component of vehicle access control in various sectors. Police forces use it for law enforcement purposes, including to check if a vehicle is registered or licensed. It is also used for electronic toll collection on pay-per-use roads and for parking lot access control.

As in many applications it is undesirable to issue RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags, a new platform for automatic number plate recognition offers a solution that will cope with the rapidly growing demand for effective license plate reading in vehicle access control.

Equipped with two new cameras, the ANPR platform by Nedap Identification Systems identifies vehicles by capturing their license plates. This technology is used in situations where vehicles need to be granted access temporarily or incidentally, such as in employee or visitor parking applications.

The brand-new cameras include the advanced ANPR Lumo that can be applied in challenging vehicular access control applications. Deep learning algorithms enable high accuracy, even in regions with license plates that include different font formats, according to sourcesecurity.com.

The ANPR Access V2 camera is the successor of the company’s ANPR Access. This license plate camera is a new development that offers better performance while being fully compatible with existing installations.

Both new cameras easily integrate with any third-party security, parking and traffic management systems using their built-in Wiegand options.

The company technology supports three platforms:

TRANSIT platform consists of semi-active RFID readers and tags (2.45 GHz) that enable vehicle and driver identification up to 10 meters (33 ft). It is specifically designed to perform in high security applications and under harsh environmental conditions, offering long-range identification of taxis, ambulances, buses and trucks.

uPASS is the leading vehicle identification platform based on UHF RFID technology. uPASS enables long-range identification using a variety of passive UHF readers and tags (± 900 MHz).

The automatic number plate recognition cameras in the ANPR product line enable comprehensive long-range vehicle identification. ANPR is specifically designed for vehicle access control applications where RFID tags cannot be issued, according to the company website. The platform is ideal for parking and city access control as well as for applications where vehicles need to be granted access temporarily or incidentally.
