The rapid growth of battlefield drones has forced militaries to rethink short-range air defense. Small, unmanned aircraft are inexpensive, widely available, and increasingly capable of reconnaissance, targeting, and attack missions. Their low cost allows adversaries to deploy them in large numbers, creating a challenge for traditional air-defense systems that were often designed to engage more expensive threats.
A new mobile counter-drone system (RapidStriker) has been developed (by Thales) to address that problem by combining detection, tracking, and engagement capabilities into a vehicle-mounted platform designed to move with frontline forces.
The system uses a network of sensors to maintain continuous awareness of the surrounding airspace, providing 360-degree coverage against low-altitude aerial threats. Once a target is detected, automated fire-control software rapidly identifies, tracks, and prioritizes the threat before assigning the most appropriate response.
Rather than relying on a single weapon, the platform supports multiple engagement options. Operators can employ guided or unguided 68 mm and 70 mm rockets, integrate small-caliber cannons, or add remotely operated munitions depending on mission requirements. This flexibility allows the system to respond not only to drones but also to other low-flying threats, including helicopters operating near frontline units.
Automation is a central feature of the design. According to Interesting Engineering, by reducing the number of manual steps required during an engagement, the system helps crews react more quickly when facing fast-moving targets or multiple simultaneous threats. According to the developer, targets can be detected, tracked, and engaged within seconds.
The rocket-based approach also adds versatility beyond air defense. Depending on the mission, the same launch systems can support precision attacks against ground targets or provide broader area effects when required.
From a defense perspective, the system reflects a broader shift toward highly mobile counter-drone capabilities. Modern forces increasingly need air-defense assets that can accompany maneuver units rather than remaining fixed around strategic locations. Mobility, rapid deployment, and interoperability are becoming as important as the weapons themselves.
The platform was also designed to integrate into larger air-defense networks. By sharing information with external sensors and command systems, it contributes to a wider operational picture rather than functioning as an isolated asset.
As drone threats continue evolving, mobile systems that combine all-around surveillance, automated targeting, and multiple engagement options are likely to play a growing role in protecting forces operating close to the front line.
