Finnish artificial intelligence startup Axel AI has secured a landmark €120 million funding round to scale its AI software for military intelligence, according to Sifted EU. The investment highlights a growing trend of collaboration between agile tech startups and the traditional defense industry in Europe, spurred by geopolitical shifts on the continent.

The startup’s technology is centered on creating what it describes as an “operating system” for defense applications. The AI-powered platform is designed to perform real-time sensor data fusion, integrating information from a multitude of sensors. This capability allows security forces and military units to gain a unified, rapid, and more accurate situational awareness, dramatically improving decision-making processes on the battlefield. The system is built to handle the vast amounts of data flowing from modern defense systems and translate it into actionable operational insights.

The investment will be used by the company to expand its research and development teams and accelerate its penetration into other European defense markets. This move comes against the backdrop of sharply increasing defense budgets across Europe, particularly in the Nordic countries, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Governments and major defense primes, which previously relied heavily on internal R&D, now recognize the necessity of integrating innovative technologies from startups to maintain a technological edge.

In addition to the capital injection, the company announced a strategic partnership with fellow Finnish firm XVision. Their joint goal is to establish a “Finnish Large AI Hub” dedicated to real-time, automated data analysis for the defense sector. This collaboration, coupled with the massive investment, positions the company as a key player in the future of the digital battlefield and exemplifies the profound transformation the defense industry is undergoing in the new era.
