In a significant development for Ukraine’s military operations, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) have successfully destroyed a Russian Nebo-M radar station using the U.S. Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS). This strategic strike is expected to enhance Ukraine’s operational capabilities by creating a secure “air corridor” for the deployment of Storm Shadow and SCALP-EG cruise missiles.
According to a report from Ukraine’s General Staff, the destruction of the Nebo-M radar significantly impairs Russia’s ability to detect, track, and intercept both aerodynamic and ballistic targets. Following this latest strike, it is estimated that only ten functioning Nebo-M systems remain operational, each valued at over $100 million.
The Nebo-M radar, introduced into Russian service in 2017, is a sophisticated multi-purpose long-range radar system. It operates in stealth mode and utilizes three vehicle-mounted radars across multiple frequency bands (VHF, UHF, L, and X) to monitor aerial threats. The system boasts a detection range of up to 600 kilometers and can relay target information to anti-aircraft missile systems, thereby enhancing interception capabilities. The radar is claimed to detect advanced 5th-generation fighter jets, including the U.S. F-22, F-35, and long-range ballistic missiles.
Previously, in April, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) successfully targeted another Russian radar, the Nebo-U, located in the Bryansk region. This radar had been instrumental in monitoring airspace up to 700 kilometers into Ukraine, aiding Russian forces in detecting Ukrainian weapon systems.
The ATACMS, utilized in this operation, is a long-range guided missile that can strike targets up to 300 kilometers away. Fired from HIMARS and MLRS M270 platforms, ATACMS missiles provide commanders with critical firepower to shape the battlefield. Despite initial hesitations from the U.S. to supply long-range weapons to Ukraine, the provision of ATACMS underscores a strategic shift in support for Kyiv.
As Ukraine continues to target critical Russian infrastructure, this successful operation signifies not only a tactical victory but also a broader shift in the balance of power in the ongoing conflict.
