In a normal country whoever was responsible for this crime – damaging IDF property on an ideological background and not for the first time – would have landed themselves a long prison sentence. In Israel not only they don’t punish offenders, they don’t even reveal their identities. In a country that invests a lot of effort in exposing every bohemian that used to smoke marijuana, they can’t even catch perpetrators of “price tag” attacks targeting the IDF.

It’s no wonder IDF personnel are very disappointed by the response of the settlers, following the damage caused to the vehicle of the Samaria division commander. The IDF is disappointed by the weak criticism of settler leaders against the perpetrators, followed immediately by them slamming the IDF for demolishing a local family residence constructed without any permits. A reminder: The IDF demolishes buildings in accordance with Israeli law.

The Prime Minister also didn’t respond properly. He did say “there will be zero tolerance towards those who harm IDF soldiers and officers. Those responsible will pay the price for their criminal activities.” He should have arrived at the settlement, set up a command post and personally oversee the perpetrators’ capture. This didn’t happen because in Israel attacking the IDF is not a serious offense. You can do anything in the name of any idealogy, no matter how insane. It’s open hunting season in Israel.

This latest incident joins a number of recent violent acts carried out the extreme right activists over the last few weeks, such as throwing rocks towards border patrol officers and throwing rocks on the windshield of a vehicle driven by a Civilian Administration officer a week ago.
